She used to love that face. The blonde hair, green eyes alive with mischief, nose with just the slightest bump in the middle. A visage that played with light and shadow, mobile and expressive. Now she viewed it with nothing but veiled loathing.

You are an insignificant nothing. I hate you for being so weak, so easily deceived, so arrogant in your constant assumption that everything will be alright. You fool.

Sighing, she looked down at her hands and said nothing for the moment. If she expected a reply, she got none. The letter she'd found only days ago, the one from his lover, the one he'd had stuffed in his top drawer, lay in a crumpled wad at her feet. He'd apologized, of course, as he always did, taking her in his arms even as she struggled against him. His lying lips had still been flapping away as she tossed his belongings down the stairwell.

She took a deep breath.

I forgive you, she whispered, looking at her own face in the mirror and smoothing a strand of blonde hair behind an ear. Sparkling green eyes, yes, shimmering with tears this time, but it would not always be this way. The long road to recovery had finally begun.

    I like the part in which she forgives herself and undertakes this road to recovery..because most of the times that is the most difficult thing to do:)

  3. I love that it's her own face. May her recovery be swift and full.

  4. @Tarunima - nice to meet you. Yes, I think it can be very difficult to forgive oneself. Sometimes, when one is mistreated, the temptation is to think that it was deserved in some way. A very damaging thought process.

    @Alex - thank you :))

    @Jen - I think it will be ;)

  5. Hello Lisa.
    Forgiving oneself is usually the hardest thing to do. She's taken the first & second steps on the road to recovery...she got rid of the liar who caused her pain & grief & she forgave herself. In time, her pain will ease and she will be free to love again.

    Excellent entry!

  6. I don't comment all that often, but I just feel like I need to tell you how much you have taught me as a writer. I have a tendency toward wordiness (as you can probably tell from this comment ;-)), and your ability to capture so much with so few words has been a great help to me.

    I'm going to make an effort to flash more regularly.

    Wait, that sounded bad ... ;-)

  9. A time like this can be difficult with enough blame to spread around to everyone. Recovery comes in various stages and can be a tough road. Your piece provides a clever insight to the process.

  10. I had to read this twice, like I do most of your pieces. There is so much to take in, I don't want to miss any bit of it. Forgiveness....that is truly one of the toughest journeys. And I think forgiving yourself is usually the hardest to do. Great piece. You're so insightful.

  12. Hmm; forgiving onself for short-comings and wrong turns seems to be a theme for this - ah, theme - of forgiveness.

    I like all the twists and turns her convincing has to take. Seeing yourself for who you are is a hard truth to face. I am empowered by her journey.

  14. Hi,

    Dramatic stuff. Love how you used the mirror to reflect inner despair, yet "in her heart of hearts" she has done the right thing. ;)

  17. Well done, forgiveness is about the person wronged ultimately. We can't move on without it.

  18. I did wonder if she was talking to herself at first and at the end it was indeed so. Yep, we have to learn to forgive ourselves when we eventually come to our senses.
