A Different Kind Of Art - Personal Post

I started out with garden stones.

Yeah, writing is art but so far it hasn't paid much; a lifetime grand total of about $250. On the other hand, I do folk art painting on the side which brings in some cash. (Hopefully) I have a new order coming in next week, so I'm not sure how much I'll be posting. But I'll be around.

Moved on to painting river stones as paperweights and such

Like it?

Most of what I do now is folk art for a local wood craftsman

Have a great week!

  4. @Jules - I sold all of the rocks :(( I can do one for you in future, I just have to get the time to actually go and find more rocks! I'll get back to you. They go for $6 - $15 depending on size and detail.

@Copyboy - I'll check you out down the road when I get this order done. Was always too lazy to bother setting up a site of my own and trying to sell. The wood items are a lot more expensive, as they're hand crafted as well as hand painted.

@Yvonne & Eagle - thanks! Makes me feel warm and fuzzy...

  6. these are brilliant! do you loom for rocks in the shape of rabbits/ dogs etc. or find camel shaped rocks and paint that?

  7. ps. I would commission one for my step mum but I think the shipping costs to the Uk might be prohibitive

  8. I had a pet rock once, painted it in second grade. I found an authentic arrowhead and my grandpa's place, too. I cried when a burglar robbed our place. Your work is wonderful. Good luck in your marketing efforts. I'd like a rock for my desk - an Indian motif, preferably.

  9. Your river rock paintings are amazing! You should so become a children's book writer/illustrator. :)

  10. That's pretty cool! You have quite the talent! And I hear you on not making much on the writing end.

  12. @Alex - they are fun! I paint tiny ones (about 2 inches) to give to students once in a while as a special behavior incentive. The boys love flat circular ones painted like coiled snakes or turtles.

@Matt - that's the problem with commissions. usually I find a rock and I can see what it should be. Taking a picture of a pet, for example, and then finding a suitable rock can be done, but it takes time. Since I can't contact you, and I removed my contact info due to hacking, I'll do a special post in future with more details on this, and you can leave me a comment concerning what you'd like. I've shipped heavy books and such to UK, it's not prohibitive. If you are on twitter, you can contact me that way.

@Jackie - not sure what you have in mind with Indian motif - do you mean like the geometric pottery designs and such? see my answer to Matt above about a future post, or you can contact me on twitter.

@Alleged - I've tried sketching and painting on canvas/paper, I'm usually unhappy with the results, although I did help illustrate a coloring book. Somehow, the 3D aspect of rocks and wood seems to suit me better.

@Mary Mary - fortunately, I had no illusions about actually earning money by writing. It's just for fun and for the challenge; my first love will always be my day job.

@Lee - you can say both :) many thanks

  13. You are SO talented Li! The rocks are awesome, the dog is precious and the box reminds me of growing up in Ohio (had lots of folk art/Pennsylvania Dutch style there). You are truly amazing and gifted.
